Your Gateway To Hydration Research

At Hoop, we believe that understanding hydration is the key to a healthier, more balanced life. Our dedicated team of hydration professionals has compiled extensive research to help individuals from all walks of life make informed decisions about their water intake, hydration habits, and overall well-being.

Water: An essential Nutrient

Water makes up 50-70% of the human body and is vital for maintaining essential functions, from regulating body temperature to supporting digestion and nutrient absorption. Staying well hydrated also helps keep skin healthy, maintains circulation, and protects against disease.

Hydration Benefits

Being well hydrated benefits both physical and mental health. It improves energy levels, supports cognitive function, reduces tiredness, and helps maintain physical performance. Even mild dehydration can impair concentration and memory, highlighting the importance of adeqaute fluid intake.

Hydration Guidelines

Our hydration needs change throughout life. Generally, adults should aim for 2 to 2.5 litres of water per day. Around 20% of our water comes from food, while the rest should come from fluids. Staying hydrated supports overall health and wellbeing, no matter your age.

Hydration as we get older

As we age, our body water content decreases, increasing the risk of dehydration. Older adults are particularly vulnerable due to reduced fluid intake and increased fluid loss, which can lead to falls, infections, and confusion.

You've Got Questions, We've Got Answers!

HOOP investigates challenges and gaps in hydration care and develops evidence-based practical solutions to improve hydration practices across the lifespan. Our current research focuses on healthcare and community settings, with particular attention to vulnerable groups such as older adults.

Our broader aim is to investigate current challenges and gaps in hydration care and develop evidence-based toolkits and practical solutions that can be applied across a variety of settings. We strive to create resources that support long-term improvements in hydration practices for different populations and care environments.

You can find our published research on the Resources page under the HOOP Research section. We provide direct links to open access journals and other platforms where our work has been featured.

Hydration is vital for both physical and mental health, yet many people don’t meet their daily needs. As we age, body water content decreases, increasing the risk of dehydration and its serious consequences, such as confusion, falls, and hospitalisation. Our research aims to address these challenges by developing practical, evidence-based solutions that support long-term wellbeing.

Our research contributes to bridging the gap between research and practice by informing the development of practical, evidence-based tools and training resources. Through collaboration with healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers, we translate findings into actionable strategies aimed at improving hydration care delivery across diverse settings.

Our research is designed to support real-world practice. We encourage healthcare professionals, educators, and community leaders to use our findings to inform hydration care and educational initiatives. We also welcome opportunities for collaboration with researchers and organisations interested in advancing hydration practices. Feel free to contact us to explore potential partnerships.
