Dehydration among older adults in residential care remains a pressing issue despite its preventability. The findings highlight the need for staff training, clearer hydration guidelines, and targeted attention toward independent residents at risk.

A recent study exploring hydration practices in two Maltese care homes revealed a strong culture of promoting fluid intake among older residents, yet also highlighted key challenges. Staff emphasized water consumption over sugary drinks, reflecting health-conscious efforts, but faced obstacles such as inconsistent fluid monitoring, resident refusal, and language barriers with non-native staff. The findings suggest a need for clearer hydration guidelines and a more person-centred approach to ensure residents’ individual needs and preferences are met.
